Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard was founded in 2006. I first visited there in 2013 while attending Drink Local, hosted by Dave McIntyre, in Baltimore Maryland. I fell in love with their wines then and there. The winery is owned by Emily Yang. Located at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain, in Dickerson, Maryland, the winery’s 22 acres of vines are French vinifera clones were carefully selected by world-renowned viticulturist Lucie Morton. Manolo Gomez is their uber talented winemaker.
The Sugarloaf Mountain Comus Red 2023 is a Bordeaux-styled blend is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. It was aged for more than a year in French oak. This is SMV's flagship red. I loved the 2022 vintage of this wine. And the 2023 is very solid follow up. Like its predecessor, this is a big, dark red wine, with powerful notes of a dark cherry, dark raspberry, blackberry compote. There's also a hint of cassis. There is an earthy element as well, with layers of dark chocolate, fig and spice, capped off with black pepper and black tea. It saves the best for last, as the finish is long. An astounding red blend.
Sugar Loaf Mountain continues to astound with their red wines.
