Hazy Mountain Cabernet Franc Barrel Select 2021 - A Cab Franc With a View

Hazy Mountain Vineyard is located in Afton, Virginia. Hazy Mountain Vineyards & Brewery was founded by Michael and Sandra McGinnis. They first planted their vines in 2016 near Swoope, Virginia, and officially opened their stunning mountaintop tasting room, with incredible views and food, in June 2021. Luke Trainum is the head winemaker.
Hazy Mountain Cabernet Franc Barrell Select 2021 Wine. It’s made with Cab Franc clones 214, 327, and 623. The harvested fruit went through a cold soak before pressing. The wine was aged in 25% new oak and 75% neutral oak. The wine starts off with a big dose of deep black cherry compote, which lovingly and slowly flows throughout the entire wine. This is followed by dark raspberry, and light notes of leather, tobacco, and wet slate. The finish has a nice dollop of black black tea and a touch of white pepper. A lovely, straight forward wine, with good balance and layers of nice flavors. Smooth and approachable. That dark cherry lingers for a long, long time.
A visit to Hazy Mountain is a lovely treat. More on that later. But more importantly, this Cabernet Franc was a lovely surprise from a winery I hadn't yet visited. Not only is there a tremendous view - but this is one Cabernet Franc that comes with a view. And a great one at that. Sip this wine and taste the mountains.
