I have long been a fan of Boordy Vineyards - more than 20 years. I have watched the Deford family completely transform the vineyards and winemaking operations, making it one of the premiere regional powerhouse wineries. More over , they have been a leader in new plantings and shepherding environmental issues.
Earlier this year, wine writer and newspaper editor Paul Vigna held an east coast wine tasting I was involved in. While there I tasted two wines that were super impressive!
The Boordy Vineyards LXXX Founder's Reserve is a complex Bordeaux-styled red blend to commemorate the winery’s 80th anniversary.
According to the winery the grapes were selected from their South Mountain Vineyard in the Catoctin AVA. They made four separate wines and then combine the best lots to make this vintage.
This blend is led by Cabernet Franc, Followed by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This is a big rich wine with lots of dark fruit upfront accentuated by Cassie and stewed prunes, and a hint of plum with a lovely note of vanilla. Incredibly complex and layered and beautifully balanced. And impressive impressive wine showcasing Tremendous quality.
The Boordy Vineyards Chardonnay Dry bench reserve 2023 was also very very special. This wine was fermented in French oak and aged on the skins for seven months. Notes of fresh apple and warm brioche abound on the nose. Beautiful fresh apple and pear are accentuated by notes of orange Blossom, followed by lemon zest on the palate. A fantastic wine.
