Italy on the Hudson - Millbrook Tocai Friulano 2024

Tocai Friulano (also known as Sauvignonasse) is a vinifera white wine grape prevalent in the Italian region of Friuli, and adjacent territories of Slovenia. It is widely planted in Chile, where it was historically mistaken for Sauvignon blanc.

Friulano from Friuli-Venezia Giulia was known as "Tocai" Friulano until March 31, 2007, when the European Court of Justice of Luxembourg set the prohibition of using the name "Tocai" in the name of the wine (as stipulated in a 1993 agreement between the European Union and Hungary). Since 2007 wines made from Tocai Friulano have been labeled as Friulano in Friuli.

It is much more aromatic than Sauvignon Blanc. There's the green apple and some incredibly lovely floral notes. Hints of tropical fruit, and gooseberry. It's got good body and lovely acidity. An absolutely delicious wine.

The best and most popular version of this wne is currently being made at Millbrook Vineyards in Millbrook, New York. This is a 100% estate Hudson River Region wine.

Ian Bearup is the current winemaker, replacing the legendary John Grazino after many years. Ian has an exceptional touch, and has done a great job handling this vintage, turning out an incredibly delicious wine.

Why more growers on the East Coast (Channing Daughters of Long Island fame has some) are not growing this by the acre full is beyond me. This wine has continued to impress for more than a decade and a half. And the winery is the largest producer of this varietal wine in the ountry (as far as I know).

If you want to treat yourself to something special, something delicious, then you want to try Millbrook Tocai Friulano Special Proprietor’s Reserve 2024.
