Situated in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Heron Hill Winery has been producing award-winning wines since 1977. Heron Hill Winery is independently owned and was founded by John and Josephine (Jo) Ingle. Nova Cadamatre as their Winemaking Consultant and Rick Porter is the winemaker.
I recently (May) took part in a Cabernet Franc Eastcoast tasting panel with Lenn Thompson of the Cork Report, Keith Beavers of Vinepair, Allison Slute of Cabernet Franc Chronicles, and Byron Elmendorf winemaker at Macari Vineyards.
Heron Hill Classic Cabernet Franc 2023 was harvested, pressed, and aged 10 months in mostly neutral French oak. The wine is a vibrant, approachable red wine. Bright cherry and cranberry notes waft from the rim of the glass, accompanied by slightly floral notes. There's some earthiness there, as well as a lovely cracked pepper finish. The fruit remains bright and drinkable. A lovely, medium-bodied red perfect for light meats and pasta dishes or charcuterie plates. A lovely crowd pleaser.
The Heron Hill Cabernet Franc Reserve 2024 is made from estate Cabernet Franc aged18 months in mostly neutral French Oak. This is a very solid medium-bodied dry red. The wine starts of with red stewed fruit. Ripe fruit. Cherries. Red raspberries. Red cassis. Plum. Cranberries. There's a savory note in the middle, with hints of cedar and herbs. Layered and complex, with solid (not not over reaching) tannins, and a hint of cracked pepper. But the red fruit just keeps coming on. Super flavorful. Very well balanced. a very, very nice reserve wine,
Two delicious wines to share with friends and family, or to celebrate a special night!
