The Urban Winery in Silver Spring, Maryland, is a family-owned business founded and owned by husband-and-wife team Damon and Georgia Callis. Georgia serves as the winemaker, having learned the craft from her father, a Greek immigrant. Damon Callis serves as her business partner and CEO. They opened the business in 2015 as the first urban winery in Maryland. The winery follows the "urban" model, meaning production takes place in a city setting rather than on a rural estate. After initially operating in the Fenton Village area on Bonifant Street, they relocated to a larger production facility and tasting room at 2315 Stewart Ave., Silver Spring, MD.
Urban Winery Silver Spring White (a big winner in the 2024 Maryland Governor's Cup) is a blend of white grapes. It's a lovely, lively white wine with tremendous flavor and finish. Great fruit up front, with tropical fruit and apple, with citrus notes, and a nice zippy ending. Looking forward to trying more wines from the Urban Winery in Silver Spring.
