Lakewood Lemberger 2023 - An Elegant Blaufrankisch By Any Other Name (with apologies to William Shakespeare)

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet...
    - William Shakespeare

A rose, is a rose, is a rose...
    - Gertrude Stein

Family owned and operated, Lakewood Vineyards has been an active part of the Finger Lakes wine community since opening in 1989. It is located on the west side of Seneca Lake, just north of Watkins Glen. The Stamp family moved to Lakewood Farm in 1951, and began planting vines the next year.  Now, 35 years later, the Stamps utilize their grapes, as well as grapes from other Finger Lakes growers, and produce about 42,000 cases of wine annually.

Chris Stamp, grandson of the farm’s founders, has been making the wines for each of the winery’s 34 vintages. David Stamp, another grandson, oversees the grape growing. The 100 acres of vineyards currently consists of 15 varieties.

Let's get this straight first - I hate the name Lemberger - I prefer and love Blaufrankisch. Don't give me semantics. They mean one in the same thing.

Lakewood Vineyards Lemberger 20223 is made from 100% Lemberger grown at Martini Vineyards  This is a dry, oak aged wine. This is a light bodied red with juicy, bright  red fruit up front - cherries, strawberries, and  just a hint of cranberry. This delicate wine, is elegant, with tremendous nuance - almost Pinot Noir-ish. A truly excellent red wine. One of the best Lembergers of the season!

A rose may be a rose... and a Lemberger may be a Blaufrankisch...  this wine, By any other name would still taste so good...
