Ever since I first visited 61 Vineyard, I have continued to be pleasantly surprised by this family run winery, owned by Mark and Pam Giganti. Located in Montgomery County, in Damascus, Maryland, 61 Vineyard produces estate-grown wines. It was without question once a "hidden gem" specializing in high-quality local reds, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sangiovese. But word is getting out.
I tasted the 61 Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2024 while visiting the Maryland Governor's Cup tasting, and pre-event tasting dinner. This medium-bodied Cabernet Franc Reserve starts off with an opulent nose, rich with fresh fruit and stewed red fruit. Notes of ripe cherry, and rip raspberry, shine alongside jammy notes of stewed dark fruits - a compote of blackberries and plums. There's also a note of something floral in the nose. These flavors come across on the palate as well as cedar, slate, and a slight hint of graphite. This is a well made wine with soft white pepper tannins and bright red fruit that lingers a very long time. A wonderful wine.
61 Vineyard Cabernet Franc Reserve 2024 is an marvelous example of an east coast Cabernet Franc.
