This past summer I did a tasting with Lew Bryson and Sam Komlenic of the Overholt rye whiskey lineup. We tasted some terrific whiskies. But the one that immediately stuck out when we tasted it was A. Overholt Monongahela Mash.
The original founder of the distillery was Abraham Overholt. The A. in A. Overholt is a tribute to him. Monongahela Mash Straight Rye Whiskey Overholt's first foray back to its roots hailing from the Monongahela Valley of Pennsylvania.
The thing I love about this mashbill is its startling departure from what is already in the marketplace. The whiskey is made from 80% Rye and 20% Malted Barley. The results in a a big robust whiskey alive with the spicy notes that are usually associated with rye whiskey, but also carry an undertone of malt, both sweet and straight forward. This is a big, solid, brawny, chewy whiskey (95 Proof) that was instantly outstanding. Caramel and Christmas spice were on the nose, with a dose of something distinctly nutty note. Brown butter and toffee were on the palate. And it finished with toffee, Christmas spice, and a hint of vanilla and honey. It's anything but sweet, but the notes were warming and lasting.
I don't want to put words in Lew's or Sam's mouths, but their reaction was something akin to mine. Surprised - in a good way.
I tasted a lot of whiskey this year...don't tell my doctor. Anyway, despite everything, the memory of tasting this whiskey left an incredible memory. I re-tasted it it recently before writing this piece to confirm my astonishment and love for this release. This was by far one of the best and most eye opening experiences of the whiskey year. Easily My Whiskey of the Year!
Buy two bottles for the holidays. You'll want one to show off, and one to keep for yourself!
