I have known Sal and Sara Turdo for a very long time. And I have been in love with their wines since I first tried them back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Turdo Vineyards is a family owned and run operation. It all begins with Sal, he is the owner, as well as master wine maker. His wife Sara, and children Luca and Tanya all run or contribute to the winery. Sal has been one of the most quality driven winemakers in New Jersey since he first started putting wine in the bottle. There were rumors that the winery was sold in 2023, but the deal never went through. Sal and Sara are still there. Luckily for us, anyway.
I recently poured their Turdo Turis Barbera 2023 at a wine tasting with friends. Incredible! The wine started off with notes of bright and dark fruit. Big notes of stewed strawberries, cherry, raspberry, and plum. There were nice notes of anise and black pepper, with a lighter touch of vanilla. There was just enough acidity to lift the fruit up, giving the wine a terrific balance where the fruit lingered and lingered for a long time. Complex and well balanced, Turdo continues to excel with Italian varietals. You simply must go to Turdo Vineyards in Cape May, New Jersey. And taste some fo the best Italian wines you'll ever try.
