Roman Roth and Wolffer Estate's Sumptuous Cabernet Francs

There is no question that one of the best tasting experiences I ever had was a completely unplanned invitation by Roman Roth to do a complete cellar tasting.  We drank whites and reds from tanks and barrels and each wine seemed to get more interesting and delicious. Roman was the consummate host, both gracious and charming.

Wolffer CAYA  2020 is 82% Cabernet Franc from 5 different vineyards,17% Merlot from their 1990 vineyard, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is a lovely dark red. Dark red stewed berries blend with light toasted nuts, a hint of medicinal, and ripe plums. The mouth-feel is rich and elegant. Fine dark cherry and fig notes are surrounded by well-integrated toasted oak and layers of velvet tannins. The Cabernet Franc leads the attack, with a wine that is sophisticated and balanced. Super, super satisfying.

Wolffer Estate Cabernet Franc 2022 is 89% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. This dark seductive swirler is filled with toasted oak on the nose, with notes of cassis, prunes, and rich blueberries. A big round fruit component on the palate blends toasty notes with tannins and a big flavor that lasts. Big fruit, complexity, balance, and king dark fruit that lasts. A sophisticated wine. Exceptional. Grippy tannins combine with silk smooth fruit. Loved it.
