TERRIFIC! MONTEZUMA CABERNET FRANC BARREL AGED VOLEUR 2019 (NY)

A got a chance last month to try the new Montezuma Cabernet Franc Barrel Aged Voleur 2019 during a virtual tasting with winemaker Phil Plummer.

Phil Plummer has been making wine in New York’s Finger Lakes region for over a decade, spending the bulk of those years at Montezuma Winery, where he has served as head winemaker since 2013. In his time at Montezuma, Phil has taken a lead role in the development and production of a wide-ranging portfolio of wines made from grapes, fruit, and honey, and was instrumental in the launch of Montezuma’s sister wineries, Idol Ridge and Fossenvue.

This wine is from the Voleur Series. French for “thief”, Voleur wines are steeped in winemaking tradition. By relying on time-honored techniques and adding his own spin, he set out to build novel wines with old souls. The 2019 Cabernet Franc Barrel-Aged Voleur 2019 is a medium bodied, soft, jammy, earthy, and spicy dry red wine. Phil made this wine with the Loire Valley’s classic Cabernet Francs in mind. This is a terrific, fruit-forward and underpinned with savory notes of oak, wood, and tobacco. More than anything it's filled with cherry, raspberry, and dark plum. According to Phil, careful oxygen management neutral barrel aging was employed to soften tannins without getting in the way of the wine’s natural aromas.
