I tasted this wine at a luncheon held by the Wine Media Guild of New York. I have known about Veritas for some time. I has been among by favorite quality producers on the east coast.
Veritas is a family-owned and run farm winery nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Andrew, Patricia, Emily, George, and Chloe Hodson share the common goal of making wines of the highest quality from the rich Virginia terroir. Veritas Winery was started by Andrew and Patricia Hodson in 1999. The winery has more than 50 acres in the Monticello wine region.
Emily Pelton daughter of Andrew and Patricia, is the lead wine maker at Veritas. Emily moved to Virginia in 1999 with the intention of taking a year off of school to help her parents and sister Chloe transition as they moved from Florida to Virginia. She went to Virginia Tech to get her Masters degree in oenology (fermentation science). According to the website, "Now fifteen vintages in, Emily has become head winemaker and proud mother of two beautiful girls, Lydia and Charlotte, who have grown up on the farm and watched the winery and the vineyard grow." She is an exceptional winemaker, one of the best on the east coast.
The Veritas Petite Verdot Monticello 2016 was spectacular. The wine was a deep purple dry red. The nose was dark red fruit - dark cherries, dark raspberries, dark blueberries - with notes of violets and lavender. There was cedar and spices and a hint of graphite. This was a terrific wine. Big fruit up front. A lovely lovely smooth middle, and a wonderful finish. The fruit lingered, and lingered. A truly lovely wine. Fantastic! Truly an impressive wine, no matter what region, anywhere.
