I have reviewed Scott Bubb's wines before in this column. I recently tried a few more just recently at the Eastern Wineries Exposition 2017 in Syracuse.
Seven Mountains is a quality producer in Pennsylvania, and among the state's best! Scott is a Mifflin County native and still lives nearby in southern Centre County. He was born in Lewistown, grew up in Lumber City, and graduated from Kishacoquillas High School in 1974.
Scott saw a 35-year career in manufacturing at New Holland in Belleville, Pennsylvania come to an end in October 2007, when the Belleville plant was closed. It was then that Scott, and his wife Mary Ann, decided to open a winery. Bubb had been an award winning winemaker who had started making home vino as far back as 1976 with Concord grapes that he picked from his Aunt Sylvia’s backyard. By 2008 he was ranked 12th on the American Wine Society's list of the top 50 US Amateur Winemakers. Since opening the winery, Bubb has won three Governor's Cups at the PA Farm Show.
The non-vintage Seven Mountains Cabernet Franc was made with organically grown grapes, and aged in both French and American oak for one year. This was a big Cabernet Franc with a big dark cherry start and a silky smooth middle, and a nice, peppery ending.
The next wine I tried was an absolute winner! Seven Mountains General Potter's Fort! This port-styled wine was barrel aged for six months to create a a big dark rich wine. Big dark cherries and dark raspberries and cassis start this wine off, which then evolves into caramel and a hint of dark cocoa on the finish. It boasts 18% alcohol and the ending isn't as sweet as you think it might be. Absolutely one of he best ports on the east coast!.
