Nassau vineyard hauls in awards

LEWES -- Nassau Valley Vineyards has received 17 new medals in wine competitions so far this year.
"We are very pleased and would like to congratulate our talented winemaker Mike Reese for his attention to detail and taste when it comes to the commercial production of our award-winning Nassau Valley varietals," said co-owner Suzette Hopkins.
For Nassau Valley Vineyard, the 2012 wine competition year began with the 36th annual International Eastern Wine Competition. The IEWC is one of the oldest and largest professional wine competitions in the United States with entries limited to wineries located in the Eastern and Midwestern regions of the United States and eastern Canada. Nassau Valley's 2010 Cabernet, Delaware White and Blueberry wines took home bronze medals.
"At the Finger Lakes International, (our) wines were tasted against a field of over 3,000 wines from 19 countries and all 50 states," said Hopkins, who co-owns the vineyard with Peggy Raley-Ward. "Our Delaware white wine won a silver medal while our 2010 Cabernet, Peach Ambrosia, Meadows Edge & Indian River red wines brought bronze medals home to Delaware."
Nassau Valley Vineyard wines also earned numerous medals at 19th annual Amenti del Vino International Wine Competition in Groton, Conn., in May. The vineyard's 2011 Peach Ambrosia and 2010 Meadows Edge won gold, while the 2010 Cabernet, Delaware White, Cape Rose and Blueberry won bronze medals.
At June's San Francisco International Wine Competition, more than 4,500 wines were judged this year -- the largest competition in the 32-year history of this annual event. NVV's 2011 Cape Rose was awarded another gold medallion and the 2010 Indian River Red and Meadows Edge were awarded bronze. The top wines from this competition will also be featured in the August issue of The Tasting Panel Magazine.
These 2012 award-winning wines add to more than four dozen others for NVV's winemaker, Mike Reese. Reese came to Nassau Valley in 2008 from North Huntington, Pa., where he received his bachelor's degree in business management and also studied chemistry and biology.
"I am excited to receive this acknowledgment from my peers and fellow winemakers, the renowned competition judges including sommeliers, writers, importers, wine educators and retailers from around the world."
Wine enthusiasts are invited to taste the 2011 house red from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
