Vineland Estates Winery, WOW!!! (Niagara CA)
My favorite from the whole weekend was the Cabernet Bo-Teek Vineyard 2012. This is a blend of Cabernet Franc (67%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (33%). Plenty of deep berry, cherry comes across, both dark and ripe, with hints of vanilla and spice, and incredible wine with lots of complexities and layers. An impressive wine.
The Elevation St. Urban Vineyard Rielsing 2012 was also incredible!!!!! The wine was beautifully balanced. There was sweetness balanced by bright acidity. There were hints of bread, lemon zest, lime, green apple, and a hint of frizzante. Bright, delicate, well balanced, with tropical fruit notes, this was a beautiful, beautiful wine!!!
The last two were also very, very nice. The Cabernet Sauvignon Icewine 2012 was an absolute shocker! Impressive. Not usually one for these kinds of wines, it had the sweetness one expects of a dessert wine, but it was also balanced with acidity and flavor to boot, making it a complex and impressive dessert wine rather than the lollipop these kinds of wines (if made poorly) they can sometimes be. In the hands of winemaker Brian Schmidt, however, that's not a problem. Beautiful.
And the Reserve Brut Charmat Method 2013 was also lovely! Notes of bread and toast on the nose as well as bright, ripe apples and tropical fruits, balanced with wonderful acidity and nice bubbles. Very nice as well.
Brian Schmidt and company continue to improve vintage over vintage, and these wines were just confirmation of that. Amazing stuff from Vineland Estate Winery!
