Arrowhead Springs Apogee - Wonderrful! (NY)

So, I am going to say that Duncan Ross, who owns Arrowhead Springs, in the Niagara Escarpment of New York, along with his wife, Robin, was absolutely shocked when I flashed this bottle on the internet last December They haven't made this in quite a while. But of course, I love cellaring wines (OK, so I forget I even have certain bottles down there). But then again that's the fun of rediscovering something once you've brought it down to the cellar - bringing it back up!

Arrowhead Springs Apogee is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Franc from 2005 and 2006 vintages. It was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels. This was a gorgeous wine with dark cherry, red cassis, and blackberry layering over one another. Beautiful aromas of vanilla and cedar waft through the wine. Luxurious fruit upfront, with nice balance and complexity. The fruit lingers, with hints of spice. A beautiful blend of wines.

The wine received a score of 86 Points from Wine Enthusiast, which raved, "Loads of toasty vanilla from new oak sits on top of blackberry aromas in this dense, non-vintage red. The velvety palate lacks depth but leads to a long, cherry-flavored finish."

Ross is a wonderful winemaker, and Apogee is just yet another example of how good.
