At EWE 2014 Talk Turns to the Weather

The talk inevitably turns to the weather. Cold. Cold. Cold. Whispers in concerned tones as well as rolling eyes and furrowed brows. The extreme cold weather in the north east is all anyone wants to talk about. Early indications from some vineyards have already experienced bud mortality numbers as high as 100% to 40%. The polar vortex seems to be to blame.

Several Long Island growers seem bullish but other New Yorkers, New Englanders, Pennsylvanians as well as Virginia and Ohio are worried with the below zero temperatures. April and May will show the proof of it. But in the mean time vineyard owners are holding their collective breaths.
