Swedish Hill Optimus and Ian Barry

Swedish Hill is a forced to be reckoned with. They make a wide variety of wines, each one more popular than the other. From sweet to dry, from still to sparkling to dessert, across three brands. Wow! And they are all their winemaker's babies.

But papa has a clear favorite. Ian was in town last night with a bottle of Swedish Hill Optimus.

This is their big red. The blending of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the traditional varieties of Bordeaux, has produced an elegant, yet full bodied wine. It was aged in small oak barrels for one year. It's very complex. As promised, it had lots of cherries, currants, vanilla and a touch of spice. Nice tannins. Nicely balanced. Smooth.

This was an elegant, big, and very supple red wine. Very, very nice.

Ian should be one proud papa!
